It’s TWU School of Education Week in Denton

TWU School of Education Week festivities

May 8, 2025 — DENTON — As students and their families look for ways to thank teachers this Teacher Appreciation Week, Denton Mayor Gerard Hudspeth decided to do it with a proclamation, declaring the week of May 5-9, 2025, TWU School of Education Week.

The son of two teachers and a graduate of Denton High School, Hudspeth wanted to recognize the dedication and commitment of educators and the importance of teacher preparation programs like TWU’s, where his mother earned a doctorate.

“All things City of Denton, from an economic development standpoint, having that human capital, having people ready to go, ready to put in the work training our next future leaders. All those things go hand in glove,” he said.

The proclamation also acknowledged the hard work and passion of TWU School of Education faculty and staff who train and mentor their students, many of which go on to become teachers in Denton and surrounding areas.

“To be here to celebrate them, to bring awareness to all the great work TWU is doing and hopefully pull in more high school graduates that want to go to TWU and go into the teaching profession — anytime I can support that, I’m all in,” Hudspeth said.

Aimée Myers, PhD, Literacy and Language Division Co-Head in the School of Education, said the gesture made an impact on TWU’s education faculty.

“The fact that he’s such a genuine, authentic person, and that he’s coming to recognize this speaks volumes to what he recognizes in us,” Myers said. “Having this special moment for all of us to come together unified to celebrate our students and celebrate our alumni, I think that’s really amazing.”

It was important to acknowledge teachers and how they affect everyone’s lives for School of Education Director Juan Araujo, PhD.

“They are more than just teachers. They are mentors, role models, and often unsung heroes,” he said. “They dedicate their time, energy, and passion to shaping young minds, fostering a love of learning, and preparing students for challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Araujo went on to recognize the crucial role he feels School of Education faculty and staff play in preparing the next generation of outstanding educators.

“Let’s thank them for being the guiding lights that illuminate the path to knowledge.”

What do you say to teachers on teacher appreciation week?

Mayor Gerard Hudspeth Quote

My message to Denton teachers is that what you’re doing is working. Whether it manifests in school, after school, eight years later, those seeds planted produce a harvest. I’m truly grateful. The students benefit. I send that message that you might not see it immediately but know that it has such a tremendous impact.

Thank you! You are the difference that makes the difference. Your pioneering spirits teach us how to create safe and supportive environments where children can thrive, explore their talent and potential, and become the world changers they want to be. We are so happy to celebrate with you!

Aimée Myers quote

We don’t tell you enough that we appreciate you. Everything you’re doing for the young people in this world is making a real difference. We know it’s hard out there right now, so our gratitude is amplified. We should do a better job of telling you thank you more often.
