Stockemer named COPE Doctoral Merit Scholarship recipient
Oct. 30, 2024 — DENTON — Jennifer Stockemer, a doctoral student in Family Studies (now Human Development & Family Studies), was named this year’s recipient of the College of Professional Education Doctoral Merit Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.
Last fall, Governor Greg Abbott appointed Stockemer to the Texas Early Learning Council, a state advisory council focused on improving quality of and access to early childhood services throughout Texas. She also serves as the Texas Council on Family Relations (TxCFR) Vice President of Memberships and was the founding vice president of the Human Development and Family Studies Doctoral Student Organization, an organization for which she also served as president.
Stockemer, who has multiple conference presentations and publications to her name, was selected as a Chancellor’s Student Research Scholar this year. In addition to her research, Stockemer’s work in the classroom as both a student and graduate teaching assistant has been impeccable.
Carrying a 4.0 grade point average as a student, Stockemer has taught multiple courses, earning high praise in her student course evaluations. Students commented that her lectures are interactive and engaging, that she wants them to succeed, and that she is responsive to student feedback.
Other nominees for the award, all with their own impressive accomplishments, included:
- Kenya Burts - Child Development and Early Education
- Sheila Richburg – Reading Education (now Literacy, Language and Culture)
- Juan Armijo – Family Studies (now Human Development & Family Studies)
“It is truly wonderful to see the great academic and service-related work our doctoral students are engaged in,” said COPE Interim Dean Brigitte Vittrup, PhD.
