Center to offer $100K in grants to rural businesses
April 21, 2026 ― DENTON ― The Center for Women Entrepreneurs, a program of the Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership at Texas Woman’s University, will open applications May 5 for its Texas Rural Grant.
Now in its fourth year, the program supports small businesses operating in rural Texas communities. Ten grants of $10,000 each — totaling $100,000 — will be awarded to eligible applicants.
Applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. on June 5. Grant recipients will be announced on June 19. Eligible businesses must have been established for at least 3 years and founded before June 19, 2023.
Rural eligibility is determined using U.S. Census and Office of Management and Budget data for counties with populations of 50,000 or fewer. Applicants are encouraged to review the list of qualifying Texas counties prior to applying.
Grant funds may be used for business-related expenses such as equipment, farm implements, fencing, or technology; inventory or raw materials; property improvements; or other activities that support business growth. Funds may not be used for wages, salaries or sales tax.
In addition to funding, awardees will participate in a virtual training program focused on financial growth, business development and marketing. Each recipient will also work with a small-business advisor to develop a three-year cash flow plan that demonstrates how the investment will drive revenue growth.
“Small businesses are a driving force behind rural economic development,” said Tracy Irby, director of the Center for Women Entrepreneurs. “When we invest in these businesses, we are not just supporting one owner — we are strengthening local economies, creating jobs and helping communities remain viable and competitive for the long term.”
