Open Educational Practices
Open Educational Practices (OEP) work closely with Open Educational Resources (OER) to create a learner-driven classroom environment that values access, affordability, and cultural responsiveness. OEP are a set of pedagogical practices that include engaging students in content creation and making their learning accessible.
OEP Community of Practice
CD3 hosts an OEP Community of Practice, whose mission is to introduce and enhance Open Educational Practices at TWU. The community of practice focuses on:
- Creating space to discuss Open Educational Practices, which includes sharing ideas, challenges, and opportunities
- Determining and hosting specific activities and events for enhancing open education in TWU classrooms
- Providing a space for peer support and collaboration for grants projects, presentations, publications, and other projects related to Open Pedagogy

Texas Learn OER Certification
Texas Learn OER is an award-winning set of ten peer-reviewed, openly licensed, self-paced modules for faculty, staff, and administrators. Texas Learn OER includes information on understanding OER; equitable Open Education practices; open licensing, including Creative Commons; finding and evaluating OER; accessibility; adapting, creating, and sharing OER; and OER policy and practice in Texas. Anyone completing the final assessment with an 80% or higher can earn a certificate of completion for free.
Teaching & Learning Guide: Including Open Education Practices into Your Courses
The OEP Teaching and Learning Guide provides in-depth practices to support you as you begin or continue your OEP journey. The guide includes information, tips, and resources designed to help you:
- Design a course with Open Educational Practices (OEP) in mind;
- Incorporate OEP into your already existing course;
- Find resources for using OEP;
- Navigate problems or questions that might arise working with OEP;
- Request support from your Instructional Design Partner and the Technology Service Desk.

OER/OEP Resources
The following resources include information about and examples of how to incorporate open educational practices into your courses. For more ideas, check out our Teaching and Learning Guide.
- The Open Pedagogy Notebook is a database of online and classroom activities focused on Open Pedagogy. The database includes examples for how to implement Open Pedagogy Practices at an assignment level, course level, and program level.
- The OER-Enabled Library page, published by the Open Education Group, provides a list of concrete examples of how OER-enabled pedagogy is used in courses. The page also includes helpful definitions and student artifacts.
- The New England Board of Higher Education Open Education Resources page includes information about Open Educational Practices and Resources, including licensing information and research.
- OER Commons is a public digital library of Open Educational resources. You can search the library for open resources to include in your courses by subject, education level, and search terms.
- This Open Oregon resource, How to find Open Images, includes a list of links to search for openly licensed images. This resource page also includes information about how to license images under Creative Commons or in the public domain.
- SPARC Non-Profit Advocacy Group is an organization that supports open systems for research and education. They provide resources to help instructors and administrators advocate for OER adoption on their campuses.
