Excelencia in Education recognizes TWU's Pioneras

Sept. 21, 2020 - DENTON - Excelencia in Education recognized Texas Woman's University PIONERAS as a Program to Watch. Excelencia in Education identifies innovative programs making a positive impact on the success of Latino students.

PIONERAS stands for Professional Improvement through Optimization of Native-language Education and the Realization of Academic/familial Symbiosis and aims to enhance Spanish language competencies, content and pedagogical knowledge, and family engagement skills of eligible students.

It is a $2.2 million scholarship and research project between TWU and the Denton Independent School District sponsored by the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) of the U.S. Department of Education.

The partnership works to improve the language and literacy skills as well as the academic achievement of the over 1,700 Spanish dominant English Language Learners in schools with dual language programs. 

PIONERAS is a wide-ranging project designed to support pre-service educators in their undergraduate education with high-quality Spanish language coursework and a study abroad program as well as in-service teachers through:

  • High-quality hybrid and online graduate coursework on methods, theories, and research-based strategies in Spanish
  • Completion of an M.Ed. or a Ph.D. degree for 10 in-service teachers
  • Family engagement activities
  • Dual language resource library
  • Family Literacy Academies
