SI Participation Guidelines
SI is where dedicated students come together to excel. Our sessions are fun and collaborative, where you’ll work alongside equally committed classmates to deepen your understanding and build lasting academic skills. To ensure everyone benefits from these sessions, please follow these guidelines:
Start early & attend regularly
SI is most effective when you participate throughout the semester. While you’re welcome anytime, regular attendance helps prevent cramming and allows you to work through concepts gradually. Come as often as you can, even if you can’t make every session.
Come prepared
Sessions work best when you complete assigned readings and homework beforehand. This preparation allows us to focus on deeper understanding rather than catching up on basics. Bring relevant course materials/notes and be ready to engage with your peers.
Engage actively
SI sessions thrive on discussion and collaborative work. This is a judgment-free space to explore ideas, ask questions, and work through challenging concepts. Take your own notes to reinforce your learning.
Stay connected
Check Canvas and your email regularly for updates from your SI Leader. Sign in at every session — while your attendance is confidential from your professor, we use this data to evaluate and improve the program. Complete feedback surveys when provided, as your input helps us enhance future sessions. Please allow 24–48 business hours for SI Leader responses.
Sign-in to all sessions
While your attendance is confidential from your professor, we need you to sign-in at each session you attend. You must be present in session for at least 40 minutes and actively participating to be counted present for the session. This helps us evaluate and improve the program.
Communicate with your SI Leader
Check Canvas and your email regularly for important updates about sessions. Complete feedback surveys when provided, as your input helps enhance future sessions. Please allow 24–48 business hours for SI Leader responses.
Important to know...
SI Sessions support regular coursework
Sessions are 50 minutes long and focus on working through challenging concepts together rather than covering all course content. SI Leaders guide you through additional practice and explanation but won’t re-lecture, tutor, or provide direct homework answers.
Your learning is confidential
Professors don’t attend SI sessions and won’t know about your participation. Even then, they only receive total attendance numbers at the semester’s end.
Additional resources are available
Beyond SI, remember to utilize your instructor’s office hours, the Science Learning Resource Center for tutoring, and the Pioneer Center for Student Excellence for academic coaching.
