Constitution Day kicks off TWU Civic Engagement Activities

September 12, 2018 — Denton — While Texas Woman’s University has historically promoted civic engagement among its students, recent initiatives beginning on Constitution Day demonstrate a renewed commitment.

“Our academic departments, especially History and Government, have been Constitution Day champions,” said Stephanie Krauth, Ph.D., Associate Vice President for Student Engagement at TWU, “but this year, we have developed a new “Pioneers Vote” campaign that really emphasizes ways to get involved in the civic process that extends beyond classroom discussions.”

Pioneers Vote not only encompasses activities around Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day, but also emphasizes educating students on the importance and logistics of voter registration, the electoral process and civil discourse regarding different viewpoints on issues during election cycles.

To strengthen its commitment and measure effectiveness, the university is a participating institution in the National Study of Learning, Voting and Engagement and the Campus Democracy Challenge. Student engagement platforms, Pioneer Engage and TurboVote, will help the university promote and gauge voter registration progress.

“Our fall events are an example of the great collaboration among the departments of History and Government, the Blagg-Huey Library and Student Life,” said Krauth. “We look forward to adding to our events and pursuing additional opportunities to serve our students and the Denton community, including serving as an official polling site in the future.”
