TWU reminds students that hazing is illegal

Sept. 22, 2023 — DENTON — TWU Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) is reminding all students that hazing is illegal and has serious consequences during Hazing Prevention Week, Sept. 25-29.

National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) is organized by Organized by Hazing Prevention Network. The 2023 theme is “Empowered to prevent hazing” with a hazing prevention focus to educate, advocate, promote and fundraise. The theme recognizes the 15 years of focus by Hazing Prevention Network to empower people to prevent hazing.

“We want students to come by our SGA Chambers on Wednesday, Sept. 27 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., learn about hazing and take the pledge to prevent hazing before it occurs, stop it when they see it and report it when they know it has happened,” said Natalie Boone, director of Sorority and Fraternity Life.

Students who are unable to attend the event in person can still sign the pledge to stop hazing

According to the Hazing Prevention Network, hazing is defined as “any action taken or any situation created intentionally that causes embarrassment, harassment or ridicule and risks emotional and/or physical harm to members of a group or team, whether new or not, regardless of the person’s willingness to participate.”

Because hazing is anathema to the culture at Texas Woman’s University, the expectations regarding student behavior and hazing exceed the expectations under state law. Students are encouraged to become familiar the TWU hazing policy.

“Student safety is a top priority at TWU, and we want our Pioneers to remember that we are all obligated to protect the safety and welfare of their peers by eliminating hazing,” said Boon.
