JHG Texas awards 100th nursing scholarship
Nov. 8, 2022 — DALLAS — Since 2018, the Johanniter Humanitarian Group (JHG) of Texas has presented more than 100 scholarships to JHG Texas Nursing Scholars. In October, the organization awarded its 100th scholarship at TWU Dallas.
Starting out with just one scholarship in 2018, JHG increased awards every year to reach the 100-scholarship milestone. At least half of the JHG Texas Nursing Scholars have been TWU students.
TWU graduate Valerie Johnson said the support she received from her scholarship was invaluable and timely. With the stress of a tuition payment, she suffered unexpected car issues that required immediate payment.
“I was fretting about using my savings to make the upcoming payment when I saw the notification for the JHG scholarship,” Johnson said. “Thanks to JHG, I did not have to pay out of pocket for the remainder of my payment plan. The JHG scholarship helped me reduce the stress that comes with financial responsibilities to better focus on my academics.”
Johnson is one of many students at Texas Woman’s University considered to be non-traditional students. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing as part of the weekend/evening BSN program at TWU Dallas, Johnson transitioned from working as a senior administrative associate at UT Southwestern Medical Center to become a medical intensive care unit nurse at Texas Health Resources in Dallas.
That journey would not have been possible without the help of JHG Texas.
“I am so thankful for their generosity to the students at TWU. Our paths may never cross, but they made a huge impact on my life because of this scholarship,” Johnson said. “I am grateful for the work JHG does, and I will wear my JHG pin proudly during my nursing career.”

About JHG Texas
Sponsored by Johanniter Hospitaller Knights in Dallas, JHG Texas raises scholarship funds to help meet the projected 20% shortfall of nurses in Texas. JHG Texas Nursing Scholarships are awarded to highly qualified student nurses who could not otherwise afford the four-year cost of earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
