TWU biology students admitted to highly competitive pre-med program

April 22, 2021 — DENTON — Texas Woman’s University undergraduate biology students Elizabeth Gaytan and Gratzelly Marquez were recently named Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) scholars. 

The program guarantees Gaytan and Marquez admission to one of the state's eleven medical schools. They also will receive financial and academic support during their studies along with access to resources and mentorship that will allow them to excel in their chosen discipline.

JAMP was created by the Texas Legislature to support and encourage highly qualified, economically disadvantaged Texas residents pursuing a medical education. In 2020, only 100 scholars were admitted out of 347 applicants from 70 public and private four-year undergraduate institutions statewide. 

“This is a tremendous honor,” Biology lecturer and program coordinator Ann Davis, Ph.D., said. “JAMP is a highly selective statewide program for pre-medical students, and they only accept very promising candidates.”

Gaytan and Marquez are passionate about practicing medicine, and both look forward to learning from talented professionals in the field. “This program will make my dream come true, and help lessen the financial burden that was holding me down from becoming a physician,” Gaytan said.

Marquez hopes to create a more equitable and diverse environment in healthcare, “and to ultimately become the best physician I can be for my future patients."
