TWU to host free virtual seminar focused on health policy

Sept. 10, 2020—DENTON—TWU’s Center for Women in Politics & Public Policy (CWPPP) and the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) will host a day-long virtual seminar focused on women leading the way in health policy. The seminar will be held 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Sept. 18, and is free and open to the public.

The day’s events include an introduction to federal, state and local health policy decision making and in-depth sessions on food security and maternal and child health. Participants can come and go as their schedule allows. Check out the TWU-PLEN events website for the seminar’s agenda.

One notable session will feature Shefali Luthra, health reporter for The 19th, a nonpartisan media outlet that reports on gender, politics and policy, who will moderate a panel of Texas legislators discussing important health issues affecting all Texans. Representatives Senfronia Thompson (D-District 141), Donna Howard (D-District 48) and Stephanie Klick (R-District 91) currently are scheduled to participate. Senator Jane Nelson (R-District 12) will introduce the panel.

“We are excited about partnering with PLEN on this event” said Tammy Key, interim director of the CWPPP, which is part of the Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership. “With TWU’s legacy of focus on health advocacy, hosting an event of this type just makes sense. We know today’s students will be tomorrow’s leaders in this arena. Providing them with a way to get more exposure and network with others in the field is key.”
