TWU to host citizen science symposium Jan. 31

 

Jan. 23, 2020 – DENTON – Texas Woman’s University will host the Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities Center for Innovation Southwest Spring 2020 Symposium, titled “Citizen Science: The Impact on our Communities by Plastics in Our Environment,” Friday, Jan. 31. The event will take place 9 a.m.-6 p.m. in room 259 of the Ann Stuart Science Complex, located on TWU’s Denton campus.

The symposium will be a “zero impact,” or waste-free, event. Educators, researchers and professionals from across the U.S. will discuss the environmental, economic and health-related impact of plastics in our soil, air and water. Presentation topics include the power of film in environmental science, scientific influence on policy decisions, hosting your own zero-impact event, and plastics in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex freshwater systems.

The TWU chemistry student organization, Kappa Epsilon Mu, will present winning submissions from their student video competition, which challenged students from all disciplines to create 4-6 minute videos about plastics. Event attendees are encouraged to bring posters demonstrating how they encourage civic responsibility through teaching, research or community service.
