Regents approve PhD in education leadership

May 15, 2020 — DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Board of Regents approved a new doctoral degree program that aims to better prepare educators for leadership roles at the highest levels of K-12 instruction, higher education and community-based leadership.

The PhD in Education, Leadership and Organization now awaits approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. If approved by the Coordinating Board, Texas Woman’s plans to launch the program as early as fall 2021.

A primary benefit of the program is to prepare leaders in schools, colleges and the community to support institutional growth. The U.S. job market for school leadership is expected to grow by 5.7% — and the Texas job market by 20% — through 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Texas Workforce Commission.

“At TWU, we lead in multifaceted ways by applying our individual and collective expertise to problems, and the PhD in Education, Leadership and Organization was born out of this imperative,” said Lisa Huffman, dean of TWU’s College of Professional Education, which will offer the program. “The very development of these programs demonstrates that we prioritize a culture that empowers faculty and staff to lead and students to grow as leaders.”

The program will be offered entirely online, which will make it accessible to a diversified audience of students, Huffman added. Courses will run seven weeks in a series of online synchronous and asynchronous settings.
