TWU student wins national advising research award

June 19, 2019 —DENTON— Texas Woman’s University doctoral candidate Elia S. Tamplin has received the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Student Research Award for their presentation, "Research on Women-of-Color Professional Experiences in Higher Education." Tamplin will be recognized with a plaque and a one-year membership at NACADA’s annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky October 20-23.

Tamplin’s research focuses on the experiences and roles of women of color working as academic advisers at two- and four-year public higher education institutions in Texas. In addition to pursuing a Ph.D. at TWU, Tamplin currently serves as the coordinator of experiential learning in the university’s Pioneer Center for Student Excellence.

“Elia Tamplin is engaged in important research that brings together theory and practice in ways that illuminate the lived experiences of women of color in college and university advising. Their work captures the challenges and opportunities for women of color in areas of higher education rarely studied and makes politically significant recommendations for change,” said Mark Kessler, Ph.D., a professor in the TWU Department of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies.
