TWU named one of the best for veterans

Texas Woman’s University has been recognized by Military Times as Best for Vets: Colleges 2019 and is included among the top 25 percent of ranked schools.

 Rankings are based on the results of a comprehensive survey as well as a detailed review of public data collected by federal agencies. This year, the university is ranked 47^th out of 208 schools, moving up from last year’s ranking of 96^th out of 218.

 According to George Altman, The Military Times editor in charge of the rankings, fewer than half of the roughly 500 colleges and universities that competed for the recognition earned the right to call themselves Best for Vets in 2019.

 “From housing the official WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) archives to including veterans in the forefront of the university’s strategic plan, Texas Woman’s has a long history of serving those who have served in our military,” said Amy O’Keefe, executive director of the TWU Office of Campus Alliance for Research Education. “We place a special emphasis on our veterans, and that care is reflected in this ranking.”

 TWU’s special services for veterans include:

• Dedicated space for military affiliated students
• Academic credit for military experience (when applicable)
• Early course registration
• Personalized help with Hazelwood and GI benefits
• Small class sizes
• Study workshops
• A Student Veterans Association and veteran cords at commencement
• A website, twu.edu/veterans, which has admissions information specifically for veterans
• An active TWU Student Veterans Association
• Veterans Advisory Council
• Special training for faculty and staff to support student veterans
• Veterans recognition events

 Liz Rosato is currently studying nutrition with an emphasis in dietetics at TWU and plans to graduate in May 2019. She served in the U.S. Air Force from 2005 until 2013. “At first, I was nervous about going back to school because I heard about other veterans having bad experiences, but it’s been a great experience for me, and I’ve never felt that I wasn’t supported at TWU.”
