Theatre Program presents ‘The Long Christmas Ride Home’

 

Feb. 7, 2018 – DENTON – The Texas Woman’s University Theatre Program kicks off its spring semester with The Long Christmas Ride Home, written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paula Vogel and directed by Noah Lelek, Ph.D., assistant professor of theatre at TWU.

The production runs Feb. 21-25.

Performance times are:

• 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21;
• 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, with discussion afterward;
• 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23;
• 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb 24; and
• 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb 25.

All performances will take place in the Redbud Theater Complex, located on the north side of Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Set during an emotionally tumultuous journey, The Long Christmas Ride Home daringly mixes the Western theatrical tradition with Japanese bunraku-style puppetry.  Paula Vogel used the early works of Thornton Wilder as her inspiration for this unique and haunting theatrical experience. Out of the most American of family rituals - the holiday road trip - she crafts a story of mystery, drama and tension that is sure to resonate with anyone who has had a family secret take on a life of its own.

The cast of The Long Christmas Ride Home features TWU Theatre undergraduate students Eric Molina, Stephanie Jasper, Britnee Schoville, Claire Parry, Alandra Baptiste, LeeAnn Ducker, Terrence Benard and Alexis-Marie Garay, along with recent graduate Jake Defoore. The cast also features TWU graduate student Bronwyn Sullenberger. Puppets will be created by graduate student Erica Cole, who also serves as master puppeteer. Graduate student Jason Domm will provide the set design, and associate professor Rhonda Gorman will serve as costume designer. Light design will be provided by undergraduate student Patrick Bohmier and Russell McKinley is technical director. Undergraduate students Alandra Baptiste and Long Ho serve as the properties designer and sound designer, respectively. Sydney Sandburg will serve as the stage manager with Michael Diaz as assistant stage manager.
