Profile
Ted Powell is a versatile pianist equally dedicated to both contemporary and traditional repertoire.
An active collaborator, Powell’s interest in new music has provided him the opportunity to work with distinguished performers and composers. He is a member of Duo Chromatica, a violin and piano duo dedicated to the performance of new works, with notable performances at the 40th Foro Internacional de Música Nueva Manuel Enríquez in Mexico City and for Kaleidoscope MusArt’s concert series.
Powell received his Bachelor and Master of Music in piano performance from Southern Methodist University, where he studied with David Karp. There, he received top honors from the piano department, including the Paul Vellucci and Paul van Katwijk awards.
With an additional background as a percussionist, Powell’s participation in the Meadows Percussion Ensemble helped forge his multi-instrumental musicianship.
Powell earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in piano performance at the University of North Texas, studying with Adam Wodnicki. During his time at UNT, he explored a wide range of contemporary repertoire through his participation in the NOVA ensemble and Spectrum series. His dissertation, “Scriabin’s Prometheus (1910): Problems and Solutions in a Transcription for Solo Piano”, provides his own arrangement of Scriabin’s last work for orchestra.
