Profile

Samuel Hood currently resides in Dallas, Texas where he is an active educator, clinician, presenter, and performer.

Dr. Hood’s most recent research contribution is The Flutist’s MAPP (Movement Applications for Practice and Performance), a method for utilizing movement to explore flute technique and musicality. The Flutist’s MAPP has been presented at universities and conventions such as Western Illinois University, Eastern New Mexico University, University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, the Oklahoma Flute Society Flute Festival, Texas Summer Flute Symposium, and the National Flute Association Convention. Flutist’s MAPP has also been taught as a semester-long class at Texas Tech University.

As a freelance performer, Dr. Hood stays active in the DFW area giving solo recitals and performing with friends and colleagues in a wide array of chamber settings. Passionate about musical outreach, Dr. Hood has arranged many chamber concerts in schools, eldercare facilities, and juvenile rehabilitation centers. He also had the privilege of playing flute with the Texas Tech University Graduate Woodwind Quintet, an NEA-funded outreach ensemble.

Hood received his DMA from Texas Tech University where he was a flute teaching assistant and the recipient of the Helen DeVitt Jones Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award. He also holds a master’s degree in Flute Performance from the University of Nebraska—Lincoln and a bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Colorado State University. Dr. Hood’s teachers include Dr. Lisa Garner Santa, Dr. John Bailey, Dr. Michelle Stanley, and Dr. Susanna Self. He has performed in masterclasses for flutists including Carol Wincenc, Jasmine Choi, and Paul Edmund-Davies.
