Profile

Russell Thompson is a performing and teaching double bass player currently based in Denton, Texas. 

As a young student in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, he studied with Tracy Rowell, a former member of the Toronto Symphony and current teacher at Oberlin Conservatory. In 2015, he earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Maximilian Dimoff, the principal bassist of the Cleveland Orchestra. At the same time, he also earned a degree in English Literature from Case Western Reserve University. Two years later, he earned a Master of Music degree from Boston University, where he studied with Edwin Barker, principal bassist of the Boston Symphony. In 2017, he attended Yale University, where he earned a Master of Musical Arts with Donald Palma, a founding member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Finally, he moved to Denton, Texas in the Fall of 2019 to earn a Doctorate in Performance with Jeff Bradetich. 

Thompson is also a proud alumni of several music summer festivals. He attended the National Music Festival in Maryland in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 he was a member of the National Repertory Orchestra in Colorado. In 2015 and 2016, he attended the Texas Music Festival in Houston. Over the summers of 2018 and 2019, he attended the American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz, Austria. He also worked as a teacher both at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan in 2012 and at Peabody Bass Works in Baltimore in 2017.

When not playing the bass, Thompson enjoys playing poker, travel, lacrosse, and reading. He plays on a bass by Oregon Luthier Seth Kimmel and a bow by Louis Morizot.
