Profile
Joshua deVries is the Instructor of Tuba & Euphonium at Texas Woman's University in Denton, TX. An award-winning tubist, Joshua deVries enjoys a diverse career as both tubist and educator. In addition to his post at Texas Woman's University, Mr. deVries has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, the Houston Ballet, the New World Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Civic Orchestra, the Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, and the South Florida Philharmonic. A passionate educator, Mr. deVries has presented lectures and masterclasses both in the U.S. and abroad to musicians at Northwestern University, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Jamaican Defense Force Band & Police Constabulary Force Bands, as well as school districts across the country.
As a soloist, Mr. deVries was the recipient of First Place in the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium & Tuba Competition in 2010 and was a Semi-Finalist of the Artist Division in 2013. In 2015, he was awarded the Yamaha In-Residence Fellowship given by the College Music Society and Yamaha to support an endeavor in community engagement through music. His project, *The People's Brass Project*, jumpstarted brass education at Chicago's only completely free music school, The People's Music School and raised over $10,000 in instruments and funds for the program. An active proponent of new music, Mr. deVries gave the world premiere of Thomas Weaver's *Sonata for Tuba and Piano* in 2015, a work he commissioned.
Mr. deVries holds a Bachelor of Music degree in tuba performance from Lynn University’s Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music degree in tuba performance from Northwestern University. His primary teachers include Rex Martin, Ken Amis, Mike Roylance, and Bill Troiano.
Mr. deVries lives in the Dallas, Texas area with his wife, Marianela, where they both maintain active careers teaching and performing. When he is not on the tuba, Mr. deVries can be found rooting on his hometown New York Yankees and Knicks.
