LEAD-UP: Lifelong Exercise for Adults in Denton - A University Program
For more than 10 years, LEAD-UP (Lifelong Exercise for Adults in Denton - A University Program) at Texas Woman's has assisted aging adults with making changes to their exercise regimens in hopes of improving overall quality of life. This university program provides TWU students enrolled in KINS 3701 Practicum in Senior Adult Fitness with hands-on experience leading and coaching senior adult community members through a variety of workouts. LEAD-UP participants have the opportunity to train at TWU’s Denton campus, free of charge, with student staff in both weight-room and aquatic settings.
Who can participate?
LEAD-UP is open to all community members who are:
- 50+ years of age
- Seeking to improve overall quality of life through regular exercise
What does LEAD-UP offer?
- Variety of cardio and resistance training equipment
- Access to Pioneer Hall’s indoor track
- Exercise programming guidance and workout assistance
- Water exercise group fitness classes
These services are all FREE thanks to generous support from the School of Health Promotion and Kinesiology.

Where and When?
LEAD-UP Workout Descriptions and Schedule
LEAD-UP – Open Gym (Pioneer Hall 223):
The weight room in Pioneer Hall 223 contains a variety of equipment available for participant use. Cardio machines include recumbent bikes, upright bikes, treadmills, ellipticals, stair-climbers, and an upper body ergometer. For resistance training, there are numerous pin-select weight machines, cable machines, dumbbells, benches, barbells, and squat racks. LEAD-UP participants are welcome to drop-in during open gym times and utilize the equipment for their own personal workouts. A limited number of student trainers will be present to assist community members as needed. Please dress in appropriate athletic apparel and closed-toe shoes. Towel and water bottle recommended.

LEAD-UP – Water Aerobics (Pioneer Hall Pool):
Water aerobics is held in chest/shoulder deep water and is open to all fitness levels (*no swimming skills required). TWU students will apprentice the instructor and eventually begin to teach on their own. Classes will combine cardiovascular exercise and resistance training to create challenging, fun, and effective total body workouts. A variety of equipment will be provided for your use. Come make a splash with us while enjoying community, great music, high energy, and low impact! Please bring your own towel and water bottle. Supportive swimwear and aqua shoes recommended. NOTE: Water aerobics class participants are not permitted to access the pool outside of class time (M/W 5:00-5:45 p.m.).

Parking:
TWU Parking provides temporary permits for LEAD-UP participants each semester. Parking permits are available for pick up during any open gym time or water aerobics class. We will have you sign a parking agreement when you pick up your permit. The permits provided allow LEAD-UP participants to park in any MAROON lot on the Denton campus.
