Biography
Dr. Aimée Myers is an Associate Professor of Literacy and Language in the Multilingual and Multicultural Studies program. Dr. Myers teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Education. She also teaches courses affiliated with the Department of Language, Culture, and Gender Studies. Her teaching specialization is focused on culturally responsive-sustaining practices. Before entering academia, Dr. Myers had 15 years working in education, including working as a secondary public-school teacher. After teaching, her work at the K20 Center for Educational and Community Renewal allowed her to act as a phase coordinator for a federal GEAR UP grant that supported students and teachers in a large underserved, urban-school district. Currently, Dr. Myers partners with the community by serving on a Title I Leadership Team that serves low-income elementary students, and she establishes experiential learning opportunities working with underserved students through the non-profit organization Communities in Schools North Texas. In her research, she works to utilize social constructivist approaches with marginalized and underserved populations. Her current research project focuses on supporting critical literacy with refugee and immigrant secondary students. Her work has been presented internationally and nationally. Most recently she shared her research at the International Conference on Urban Education, National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Association of Multicultural Educators. During her time at TWU, she has been awarded the COPE Innovation Fellowship, the Academic Assessment Fellowship and the Chancellor’s Research Fellowship. She is also a part of the Provost Leadership Academy. She also served three years as the Assistant Director of Assessment and Accreditation for the university.
