Biography

Julie Libersat , M.F.A. is an intermedia artist who uses arts-based research to explore how we navigate the built environment. Born in Kerala, India and raised in Philadelphia PA, Libersat explores our complex relationship to location and belonging through themes of home, navigation, and belonging. Her art practice is interdisciplinary and utilizes a range of media resulting in a range of presentations including, public art, interactive new media, sculptural installation, digital fabrication, and mobile applications. Her ongoing research connects spatial theory, locative media technology, and contemporary art practice to provide new connections with art education and mobile pedagogy.
Libersat holds a B.F.A. in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art, an M.A. in Art Education and a M.F.A. in New Media, both from the University of North Texas. Libersat has exhibited in the US and abroad including shows at the Dallas Contemporary Museum, School 33 in Baltimore, The Center for Art and Culture in France, Currents International New Media Festival, Paseo Taos and Museo de la Cuidad de Mexico. She has received a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, the 2014 CADD FUNd grant and the Velma and Davis Dozier Travel Grant from the Dallas Museum of Art. Her work has been reviewed in The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, and Sculpture Magazine online. She has been published in Studies in Art Education, the publication of the National Art Education Association.

Recent Artistic Works

No Direction, 2019, Public art installation commissioned by the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy in Boston, MA. No Direction is inspired by the patterns and symbols in street markings and highway signs and explores our relationship with the symbolism of the automobile and road. The totemic stacked signs in No Direction are activated by the wind, which rotates each layer of sign like a windmill. The signs have no markings; they are in motion yet they provide no direction for transportation. The reflective material is activated at night by the reflected light from passing vehicles and street lamps. Pedestrians and drivers are invited to reconsider their physical engagement with navigation and orientation and the everyday landscape encountered in transit.
