Biography

Johnathan Smilges is an Assistant Professor of English and Affiliate Faculty of Multicultural Women’s and Gender Studies at Texas Woman’s University, where they study the entanglement of queer, trans, and disability rhetorics. They received their dual-Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Women’s Studies and their M.A. in English from Pennsylvania State University. Their B.A. in English Literature and Young-Adult Education is from Capital University. Their current book project, Queer Silence: Disability, Pathology, and the Rhetoricity of Absence, has been recognized by the American Studies Association (ASA), the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). They currently serve as the co-chair of the Disability Studies Standing Group for CCCC, and they are an incoming member of the ASA’s Committee on Gender and Sexuality Studies.
