TWU provided perfect fit for grad’s healthcare goals

If college truly is a harbinger to career pursuit, then Ego Nina Ibe found the perfect match in Texas Woman’s University.

Ibe, who is earning a PhD in Nursing Science this fall, chose to enroll at Texas Woman’s because of the university’s strong history of helping place women in leadership roles.

Such empowerment, Ibe said, aligns perfectly with her own commitment of advocating for women’s health and wellbeing and advancing health policies that support marginalized women.

Ibe has been working as director of advocacy for quality nursing and patient care at Mowasat Hospital in Kuwait but will be retiring because of health challenges. 

Over the past six years, she founded a non-governmental organization, Well Springs of Hope in Nigeria, which is dedicated to supporting women in southeastern Nigeria through financial, maternal health and medical assistance for women affected by female cancers.

The organization’s goal is to provide resources to enhance health and wellbeing so women in the region can lead more productive, fulfilling lives.

Ibe’s early professional experiences in nursing, particularly in labor and delivery and as a women's health nurse practitioner, drove her to pursue a PhD in nursing. 

She also wants to advocate for improvements in access and policies related to women's health.

Ibe plans to collaborate with organizations dedicated to helping women access quality health care and to drive health policies, including partnering with non-government organizations such as Jhpiego, Women in Global Health Nigeria, Care International and others that support cancer prevention in low- to middle-income countries, such as Nigeria.

On a personal note, she intends to further her education in psychiatric and mental health nursing to enhance her skills and insights to support women as they navigate the complexities of a cancer diagnosis.
