Parents were inspiration for grad’s nursing journey
Sometimes, career paths are shaped by the people who influence us most.
Lauren Houser, who earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice this spring from TWU’s Dallas campus, is a perfect example of that.
Already a family practice nurse practitioner, Houser was inspired to pursue a career in nursing by two incredible role models: her parents.
Her father is a family physician who showed her what it means to care for people with compassion and commitment. Her mother – who has always gone out of her way to serve others through church, community programs and being there for people in need – taught her the heart of service. Her parents instilled in her a deep sense of purpose.
Houser’s Doctor of Nursing Practice project focused on increasing access to breast cancer screening in a rural, underserved community through the implementation of a mobile mammography unit.
By bringing breast cancer screening directly to patients outside of a clinic, her team was able to overcome significant barriers such as transportation, scheduling and awareness.
Thanks to the support of the team and the community, the unit increased breast cancer screenings by 448% during the project period.
Houser says the project is a powerful reminder that meeting people where they are – literally – can make a real difference in helping them get the care they need.
After graduation, she plans to spend much deserved time with family, especially her two girls, Maggie and Miranda.
“I truly believe that God has guided each step of my journey, giving me the direction and strength to serve others in a meaningful way,” Houser said.
