Mother balances full-time work, courseload on degree path
April 29, 2025 — HOUSTON — Some nights ran later. Some mornings started earlier. Carefree weekends faded away to focus on assignments. But on May 4, when Veronica Mata, a mother of three, walks across the stage to receive her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education, she says it will be worth it.
“The journey has been filled with challenges and determination, but I’ve been fueled by my commitment,” Mata said. “I embrace the growth that comes with this experience.”
Two years ago, Mata, a full-time paraprofessional in the Houston Independent School District, decided to add one more thing to her already full plate — becoming a full-time student. She is one of the first graduates from TWU’s Grow Your Own partnership with Houston ISD.
“This program was the most significant opportunity for me to realize my dream of becoming a teacher,” Mata said. “It has dramatically altered my career path by enabling me to become a certified teacher.”
Mata will begin work as a certified second-grade teacher for Houston ISD in Fall 2025. With her degree and Texas teacher certification, after six years working as a paraprofessional learning coach, Mata will see an approximate salary increase of 30% as a second-grade teacher.
“Not only will this open a broader range of professional opportunities, but it also provides a profound sense of achievement,” Mata said.
She has continued to work as a full-time Houston ISD employee while maintaining a full-time courseload — along with her full-time duties as a mom. But her family has provided unwavering support along the way.
“Their pride in my accomplishments reminds me that they have always believed in me,” Mata said.
School of Education Director Juan Araujo, PhD, indicated that Mata’s family aren’t the only ones who believe in her.
“Veronica is a stellar education student. She represents the best of what a pioneering spirit is all about at TWU, and what we are trying to accomplish with our Houston area Grow Your Own initiative,” Araujo said. “A true unicorn.”
Mata says it’s been a life-changing dream come true.
“This program has changed my life for the better because I’m living a dream I never thought I could achieve.”
