Father’s bout with cancer inspired nursing degree

An institution that empowers women and has a focus on families drew Khushboo Thanawala to Texas Woman’s to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 

Her daughter was only 2 when Khushboo began her academic journey and, with her husband’s and daughter’s support, she graduated magna cum laude.

Khushboo, whose family is from India, was inspired to pursue a career by her father. When Khushboo was 13, her father was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. He was on dialysis three times a week and Khushboo would accompany him for his treatments. After seeing how the nurses cared for her father, she decided to go to nursing school. Not only was nursing Khushboo’s dream career, it was also her father’s wish she become a nurse to help people like him. 

After graduation, Khushboo will work in the operating room at Ben Taub Hospital in Houston and will be advancing her skills in pursuit of a master’s degree.

She credits the support and encouragement of her husband and daughter, her mother and her in-laws in pursuing her dream.
