April 30, 2024 — DENTON — The Texas Woman’s Educator Preparation Program (EPP) in the College of Professional Education was approved as a Texas Reading Academies authorized provider.

“This authorization will greatly support the preparation of our teacher candidates and the districts they serve,” said Associate Dean Gina Anderson, EdD.

Recent state legislation (House Bill 3) requires all Texas teachers from kindergarten through third grade, including those in special education, to participate in the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Reading Academies. The program includes 60 hours of training and can cost anywhere between $400-$3,000 to the teacher or school district.

With the TWU EPP serving as an authorized provider, TWU students will experience little to no cost to complete this new state requirement. Additionally, TWU graduates will save time and money for either their hiring school district or themselves as they begin their careers in the classroom.

Anderson thanked JaNiece Elzy, EdD, and Heather Cato, PhD, in Literacy & Learning for co-authoring the successful application.
