Guidance if law enforcement agents come to campus

Dear TWU Community,

As I promised in my message yesterday, my leadership team has put together some specific guidance for TWU faculty and staff if law enforcement agents come to campus. This is not legal advice but simple guidance.

It is important to note that law enforcement officials may be on campus for reasons unrelated to enforcement actions. They may be here for career recruitment events, guest lectures, and conducting routine security clearances. For instance, for our international programs, the university must report certain information about students with F-1 or J-1 visa status to federal Immigration Customs and Enforcement. This reporting is routine, and the university must comply with on-site visits to review records when requested.

Steps to take when contacted by law enforcement agents

  1. Remain calm and professional to avoid escalating the situation.
  2. Direct law enforcement agents to TWU Police: 940-898-2911 (24/7).

It is pretty much that simple. No matter the cases my team considered, the essential step was to direct the agents to TWU Police.

On Monday (1/27), Provost Bauer, Dr. Mendez-Grant, and I sent out a list of campus resources for students, faculty, and staff. In addition to that, I want to include one more: TexasLawHelp.org (a collaborative effort by Texas legal aid organizations and foundations, courts, and nonprofits to provide free, reliable legal information).

I hope this guidance is easy to remember and helpful should you need it.

With a pioneering spirit,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Chancellor and President
