Gov. Abbott will be on campus Monday

Dear Texas Woman's Community,

I want you to know that on Friday afternoon, Gov. Abbott selected the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, established by the Governor's Commission on Women and housed in our Blagg-Huey Library, as the backdrop for a ceremonial signing of SB 15 this coming Monday. I understand some of you strongly oppose this legislation while others favor it. Either way, at this point, it is the law.

As a public university, we respect the governor, senators, and representatives that the people of Texas have elected to enact laws. This respect is democracy in action. In a healthy democracy, there is also time, place, and manner for people to voice their concerns peacefully and respectfully.

I believe it is possible to follow the law and continue in our ongoing work of building a university community where students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds and beliefs feel a sense of belonging. As a former colleague once taught me, life is full of "both/and" opportunities.

Let me end with a virtual hug to those in our community who may feel particularly vulnerable at this time. I see you. I value you. And I wish everyone a restful remainder of your weekend!

With a pioneering spirit,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Chancellor and President
