Juneteenth Holiday

June 17, 2020

Dear Texas Woman’s Community,

Yesterday, I saw UNT join with companies and universities from around the country in marking this year’s Juneteenth as a work holiday. I applaud President Smatresk for his initiative, and I want to join this movement to elevate the ways we celebrate Juneteenth at Texas Woman’s. At my recent cabinet meeting, our general counsel reminded me that while some worry about “erasing history,” the reality is that we live with important stories that are too often only quietly told. It seems many of us opt for the easy path and like to distance ourselves from reminders of a disgraceful past. We are continuing to see the repercussions of our failure to look at our—all of our—history. So on Friday, June 19, Texas Woman’s will join with UNT and others closing our campuses to come together in appreciation, reconciliation, and commemoration of this inflection point for the United States. Happy Juneteenth!

With a pioneering spirit,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Chancellor and President
