Happy May Day and a special celebration of service

lily of the valley

Dear TWU Faculty and Staff,

Happy May Day Eve!

In my home country of Belgium, May 1st is not only a celebration of workers and their contributions, but also a day marked by a tradition—sharing sprigs of Lily of the Valley. This delicate flower symbolizes happiness and good fortune, and my mother never missed a year in sending me a small bouquet or image of one on May Day, no matter where I was in the world.

It always reminded me of the joy in honoring those who quietly, consistently, and lovingly make a difference.

Here at Texas Woman’s, we have our own way of celebrating dedication and service. For those on the Denton campus, I hope you will join us tomorrow (May 1) at 2 p.m. in the Southwest Ballroom of the Student Union at Hubbard Hall for the annual Service Awards and Retiree Recognition Ceremony. As Austin Hammond’s recent email mentions, this event is our chance to honor employees for their years of commitment and to recognize our valued retirees.

As a reminder, the Houston campus ceremony will be Tuesday, May 6 at 1 p.m. and in Dallas, Wednesday, May 7 at noon.

I look forward to gathering in community, gratitude, and celebration—perhaps imagining a few Lily of the Valley blooms.

With a pioneering spirit,

Carine M. Feyten, Ph.D.
Chancellor and President
