Mapping Her Legacy
Our goal
The goal of this research project is to identify the first woman elected to public office in each Texas county.
These names and stories will be compiled into an interactive feature on the Texas Map in the Sue S. Bancroft Women’s Leadership Hall for public viewing. Located at Texas Woman’s University, the Hall honors the history, progress, and leadership of women across the state. This initiative is not only about names and dates—it’s about honoring the legacy of civic leadership, ensuring these milestones are preserved and celebrated for generations to come.

How you can help
We’re reaching out to county historical commissions, local historians, archivists, librarians, and community members to help uncover this history. If you have information—or even just a lead—about the first woman elected in your county, we’d love to hear from you.
The form is linked directly below for your convenience. It includes space to share names, dates, offices held, supporting documents, and any additional details you may have. Whether you have full records or just a story passed down, your contribution matters.
