She’s a high flyer – on the mat and in the classroom
July 10, 2025 – DENTON – Brooke Speights has soared during her time at Texas Woman’s. Not only as a high-achieving student but also as a flyer on the STUNT team.
Speights graduated magna cum laude with a BBA in accounting from Texas Woman’s in May 2025. She was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, a prestigious business honor society at the Merrilee Alexander Kick College of Business and Entrepreneurship. As a senior on the TWU STUNT team, she was named to the All-Lone Star Conference First Team and the All-Academic Team.
Now, she is returning to Denton as a graduate student to pursue a master of science in accountancy. She also added an accounting award to her list of accomplishments.
Speights was one of 47 accounting students from across the state to receive the Accounting Excellence Award from The Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants. The TXCPA presents its Accounting Excellence Award to an outstanding accounting student at Texas colleges and universities participating in the programs of the Accounting Education Foundation.
“Receiving the TXCPA Accounting Excellence Award is a huge honor,” Speights said. “It reinforces that hard work, dedication and perseverance do pay off. Being recognized for this award reminds me that I’m on the right path and that others see my potential.”
Going to school for accounting felt like a natural fit for Speights, who had always enjoyed math.
“It offers a solid foundation for understanding how businesses operate through financial data and reporting,” Speights said of accounting. “I was also drawn to the stability of the field and the long-term career potential it provides.”
Speights found a perfect fit in Texas Woman’s after earning her associate’s degree from North Central Texas College. She was able to pursue her career ambitions as well as continue to fulfill her passion for competitive cheer by competing with the STUNT program for the last two years.
“I first learned about the TWU STUNT team when I was looking into the college and decided to attend their clinic during the application process,” Speights said. “I was recruited and everything just fell into place. It has been a memorable part of my college experience.”
Speights plans to continue competing with STUNT for the 2025-26 season as a graduate student.
Another highlight of her time at Texas Woman’s was serving as a student mentor with the MAK College’s Owl’s Nest Peer Mentoring Program.
“As a mentor, I had the chance to support first-year students and help them adjust to this new chapter in their lives,” Speights said. “These experiences have helped me grow both personally and professionally while providing me access to a close-knit learning environment with my professors who have helped support and guide me during my journey.”
The MSA program prepares students for the CPA, CMA, CIA and other designations and includes a CPA review course as an elective.
“I plan to pursue both CPA and CMA certifications to expand my knowledge and keep opportunities open in various areas of accounting,” Speights added.
