HR society recognizes TWU student chapter with national honor

July 27, 2021 – DENTON – The Texas Woman’s College of Business student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) received the 2020-2021 Superior Merit Award from the national organization for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

The SHRM Student Chapter Merit Award program encourages the development of more effective student chapters and recognizes outstanding activities and projects. Chapters are recognized based on operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and SHRM engagement.

“The members of our SHRM student chapters represent the next generation of HR leaders, and it’s critical to highlight the instrumental role they play in SHRM’s success,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, SHRM president and CEO. “The hard work of the TWU students shows the future of the profession is, indeed, in good hands. I applaud their accomplishments and ability to foster innovative programming, development and interest in HR as we navigate changing workplaces.”

SHRM student chapters have the opportunity to earn the award based on the number of activities they complete during the merit award cycle, the most recent period of which ran from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021.

Some of the TWU chapter’s activities included: holding informational sessions for the SHRM-Certified Professional Exam and Certification (SHRM-CP); creating networking events each semester in partnership with DallasHR and North Texas SHRM professional organizations; sending students to the Southwest HR Virtual Conference hosted by DallasHR; and participating in multiple career and organizational fairs through TWU to expose the purpose and mission of TWU SHRM. The chapter also had a high number of MBA students participate in its activities and learned many helpful ways to continue to engage the MBA students in future events.

“This academic year has challenged us in new ways, but it has also shown the strength and perseverance of so many students,” said 2020-2021 TWU chapter president and May 2021 graduate Marquee Crandall. “We were faced with a new way to engage, and we utilized our resources to put on a program that definitely held up the values of TWU SHRM—for all TWU students to understand the benefits of human resource management.”
