Melanie Denise Gibson ’01
As a newly published author and a healthcare industry writer, Melanie Denise Gibson ’01 enjoys helping others through the power of words. Though she had grown up in Snyder, TX, Gibson had a connection to Denton through her parents and was born there. At Texas Woman’s, Gibson enjoyed the more personalized educational experience that was offered.
TWU's size allows students to receive individualized attention from faculty...I had a great experience at TWU and living in Denton near the flagship campus.”
Having worked in the healthcare industry since 2004, Gibson designs leadership training for Texas Health Resources. Her responsibilities include individual coaching, writing development courses, and designing learning labs among other responsibilities.
Earlier this year, Gibson published her book, “Kicking and Screaming: A Memoir of Madness and Martial Arts,” which tells the story of how she overcame her biggest challenges with mental illness through the art of Taekwondo. Gibson aspires to connect with others who may be facing similar struggles to what she experienced.
I hope to reach out to other people who are ‘hiding in plain sight’ and also experiencing mental health conditions.”
Now a second degree black belt, Gibson has chronicled her martial arts journey in her blog, Little Black Belt. In addition to writing and practicing Taekwondo, Gibson also enjoys yoga, playing classical guitar and Sunday afternoons at her local pool hall.
