Texas Woman’s University opened its new Institute of Health Sciences-Houston Center in August, 2006. Located at 6700 Fannin, in the heart of Houston’s world renowned Texas Medical Center, the new Houston Center is a 10-story, 202,000 square-foot “campus in one building” that was funded at no cost to the state through an innovative public/private partnership that has raised nearly $40 million for the new building.
Currently, more than 1,300 students majoring in nursing, physical therapy, library science, healthcare administration, occupational therapy and nutrition are enrolled at the TWU Houston Center. The building was designed by Kirksey Architects and built by Vaughn Construction, both of Houston.
TWU First Health Fair!
Thank you all for the collaborative work that was done by so many to make our first health fair successful. Please see one of the many responses from an attendee of the health fair:
On Monday, October 19, 2009 I was privileged to enjoy one of the most informative and interactive health fairs I have ever attended. There were a range of vendors who represented many areas of community and personal healthcare. Staff and students had the opportunity to not only gather information on a variety health care subjects, but we also had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with the vendors. The information ranged from the very practical, such as the effects of drugs and alcohol on the body, to in depth information on acupuncture, marrow donations, and the correlation between spiritual and physical health. I was especially captivated by both the Kingdom Builders table provided by Windsor Village United Methodist Church and “Be the Match,” the Gulf Coast marrow donor program, table. Kingdom Builders offered attendees the opportunity to privately receive prayer on the spot and an opportunity to complete a prayer request form which was taken back to the church for deeper prayer. After talking with representatives from “Be the Match” I was moved to sign up as a possible marrow donor.
All of the vendors I had the pleasure of speaking with were very knowledgeable and presented their information in a way that could reach the average consumer. Staff that assisted with this event was very helpful as well in knowing where to direct attendees for specific information. I hope the health fair becomes an annual event.
