Mission Statement

The mission of the Division of Visual Arts is to educate and empower a diverse community of students through creative research practices at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We prepare students for fulfilling careers as artists, designers, educators, scholars and leaders in a variety of settings.

Commitment to Community and Interdisciplinarity

As a Visual Arts Division, we recognize education’s and visual art’s inherent abilities to cultivate awareness of one’s identity, and one’s relation to the various communities we are a part of. Therefore, we are committed to:

  • Fostering a caring community of learning and creativity.  
  • Teaching about the history of art in ways that examine the social contexts that influence interpretations.
  • Recognizing the intersections between all the different ways humans define and distinguish themselves and others in regard to identity. 
  • Encouraging holistic consideration of perspectives through cross-disciplinary coursework and programs.
  • Creating safe and equal spaces for all kinds of students and faculty.
