Procedures and Criteria for Admission to the TWU Undergraduate Social Work Program
The TWU Social Work Program is committed to the goal of nondiscrimination and operates without discrimination in regard to race, color, gender, age, creed, ethnic or national origin, disability, or political or sexual orientation.
Prospective TWU students:
- Review the First-Year Student and any other applicable admission requirements.
- Apply to Texas Woman’s University online at ApplyTexas.org.
- Once you have successfully completed the university's undergraduate admission process and received notification of your acceptance, please refer to the current students’ criteria and procedures listed below.

Current students accepted to TWU as of Fall 2014:
If you are interested in social work as a career, you are encouraged to enroll in introductory courses and to explore your interests through interviews with social work faculty members. You may declare a major in social work at any time, although we encourage you to do so during your first semester in the program. Continuation in the major, which includes admission to the social work practice courses and the field practicum, requires that you meet specified program standards and complete a screening procedure for the field practicum.
Requirements for Admission to the Social Work Program
Prior to admission to the social work program, students must:
- Schedule and attend a meeting with the social work program director;
- Provide evidence of achievement of a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.5 (note: a GPA of 2.5 will be required for admission and ongoing access to enrollment in the social work practice sequence and the field practicum); if unable to provide a transcript or inability to meet GPA requirement, the student will be provisionally allowed advisement only. Upon evidence of all appropriate paperwork and GPA, and a letter of acceptance into the social work program, the student may proceed with the social work practice course sequence;
- Complete and submit an application to the program with a current, TWU-evaluated transcript attached (forms can be obtained from the Social Work Practice Center, OMB 203). This application should reflect a student’s professional readiness and emotional suitability for social work practice education. Such qualifications include a service orientation to others, tolerance of diversity, an inclination toward participation in the promotion of social and economic justice, respect for conditions of human need, an ability to appreciate and relate to others, and a capacity for scholarship. This application is completed during enrollment in SOWK 3223/3221;
- Sign a statement indicating awareness of and adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics and other program requirements;
- Submit a final videotaped assessment completed in SOWK 3221; and
- Attend one scheduled social work program orientation.
Potential actions of the Admissions Review Committee
Upon review of a student’s application, the admissions committee (comprised of social work program faculty and staff) will rule in one of three ways:
- Acceptance to the social work program – A student satisfies both academic and non-academic guidelines. An adviser is assigned and the student is informed of the need to meet with the adviser. If the student is interested the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Program, the Title IV-E program coordinator will advise him/her.
- Conditional acceptance to the social work program – A student is found to have deficiencies that are considered needing remediation in either academic or non-academic areas. Conditional admission contracts are developed in conjunction with both the faculty and the student.
- Denied admission – A student is found to have deficiencies that are considered being beyond immediate remediation in either academic or non-academic areas.
