Course Assistant roles and responsibilities

All CAs and CAMs will:

  • Attend a two-day training prior to the beginning of the semester
  • Attend mandatory meetings with the supervisor during the semester
  • Observe at least one of their peer’s SIT sessions
  • Be observed and debriefed after observation
  • Be invited to attend additional workshops designed to develop skills, as available
  • Behave professionally at all times

In Class:

  • Listen and take notes
  • Act as a model student
  • Promote SIT
  • Maintain a positive attitude
  • Assist with in class activities, as needed
  • Monitor grades

Lesson Planning:

  • Discuss appropriate challenging content to cover for SIT sessions with instructor
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all CAs for the course to ensure similar content is covered by all CAs
  • Plans should be consistent with UMKC lesson plan model and should be designed to last no longer than 40 minutes
  • Tutoring will comprise about 10 minutes of each SIT session
  • All activities must be completely mapped out and turned in with the lesson plan (including answers to problems)
  • Completed lesson plans must be approved by Supervisor or CAM

SIT Sessions:   

  • Will hold 3-5 SIT sessions per week.
  • Will work 4-5 Saturday SIT sessions per semester
  • Each Science CA will work at least one Sunday SIT session per semester
  • Take and track attendance
  • Be prepared in the SIT room before the session is scheduled to start
  • Will leave the room organized the way it was found
  • Each SIT session is about 50 minutes. The supplemental instruction portion is about 40 minutes and tutoring is about 10 minutes.
