Grand opening of the Student Union at Hubbard Hall set Feb. 25

Feb. 14, 2020 — DENTON — Texas Woman’s University will celebrate the opening of the Student Union at Hubbard Hall on February 25 with a kick-off ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. on the second floor near the information desk

The day will be filled with activities for students, faculty, staff and alumni, and everyone is encouraged to attend.

“The celebration of the opening of the Student Union at Hubbard Hall has been something that our students have eagerly anticipated for a long time,” said David Sweeten, director of the student union and conference services. “While renovating an older building has certainly had its challenges, we think the end result is something that reflects the desires of our students.”

The new Student Union at Hubbard Hall provides more than 125,000 sq. ft. of space for students, additional retail dining options, including a full-service Chick-fil-A and Qdoba, and amenities like quiet lounges, a meditation room, performance lounge, game room, meeting rooms and expanded conference spaces to accommodate various internal and external meetings.

“The new space would not exist had it not been for the work of everyone involved in the referendum, including students and staff who were part of the TWU Student Union Advisory Board and TWU Student Union Referendum Committee” said Sweeten.

In 2015, 57% of students voted in favor of raising the student union fee in order to fund a new union in Denton and add new services and amenities to the Dallas and Houston campuses.

Before the building closed for renovations in April 2018, it had served as home to Student Health Services, TWU Department of Public Safety and the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame exhibit. The building was originally constructed in 1950 and had been used a dining hall for several years.
