TWU named Military Friendly® for 10th time in 10 years

Feb. 4, 2019 — DENTON — Texas Woman’s University has been designated as a Military Friendly® school for the 10th consecutive year.

“TWU has a long history of serving those who have served,” said Amy O’Keefe, executive director of the TWU Office of Campus Alliance for Research Education (CARE). “We place a special emphasis on our veterans and recognize their uniqueness.”

Today, women represent 16 percent of enlisted forces in the United States, but at Texas Woman’s, the student veteran population is 60 percent female.

“Because female veterans comprise a much larger percentage of our overall veteran population than those found in the armed forces and at other educational institutions, women veterans have more opportunities for leadership and support at TWU,” said O’Keefe.

Supporting women’s leadership initiatives and veterans are two key components of the university’s strategic plan. From housing the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) archives to providing a designated lounge for student veterans, TWU embraces the opportunity to provide leadership and insight into improving the quality of life for veterans and their families.

Elizabeth Rosato, a current TWU student veteran majoring in nutrition, credits TWU with offering leadership opportunities for women veterans. During the fall 2018 semester, she spoke at the Texas Veteran’s Higher Education Symposium and the TWU Board of Regents meeting, and this month she will travel with other TWU student delegates to meet with state representatives in Austin.

“When I decided to go back to school, I was nervous about how I would be perceived and treated as a veteran,” said Rosato. “From the moment I arrived on campus at TWU, I had a positive experience. Everyone has been very warm and friendly and proud of the fact that I had served.”
