Visual Arts ‘humanizes the digital’ with upcoming exhibitions and symposium

March 15, 2018 – DENTON – The Texas Woman’s University Department of Visual Arts will host two digital arts exhibitions in conjunction with the 2018 North Texas Digital Fabrication Symposium in April. Artists, researchers, makers and students will gather at TWU’s Denton campus to discuss digital fabrication in practice, theory and curation, while also showcasing artworks that consider the ways in which new technologies are reconnecting society with humanity.

The “Humanizing the Digital” exhibition will be on display March 31-April 22 in TWU’s East|West Galleries, located in the university’s Visual Arts Building. The digital fabrication exhibition will include works by some of the artists and presenters from the symposium, and represent a broad range of practices and viewpoints within the world of digital fabrication. An opening reception will be held 5-7 p.m. March 31.

The 2018 North Texas Digital Fabrication Symposium will be hosted in the Visual Arts Building April 20-21. The symposium will include panel discussions organized around three subthemes: embodiment and technology; adaptation and play; and process and practice. Six afternoon workshops will provide participants with hands-on experience using digital fabrication tools.

In conjunction with the symposium, a juried exhibition of student artwork will be on display April 20-21 in the Project Space, located in the Visual Arts Building basement. The “(Non)Standard Exhibition” will showcase a range of works incorporating digital fabrication technologies from undergraduate and graduate students across all art and design fields. Works are expected to include handmade elements and/or explore an aesthetic of imperfection or failure.
