TWU, Dallas Women’s Fdn. discuss research on women’s economic barriers in TX

Texas Woman’s University has partnered with the Dallas Women’s Foundation, the largest regional women’s fund in the world, on new research about barriers affecting women’s ability to positively advance in the Texas economy. These critical barriers are: Education, Childcare, Health Insurance and Housing.

This research, released on TWU campuses in Dallas Feb. 9 and Houston Feb. 10, looks at policies and practices at the state level, and identifies areas of opportunity where innovation and investment can help women and their families succeed.

The Dallas panel presentation, moderated by The Texas Tribune, focused on educational barriers and how access to childcare affects the economic progress of women.

The Dallas panel was  led by TWU Chancellor Carine M. Feyten and Roslyn Dawson, CEO and president of the Dallas Women’s Foundation, and included TWU Professor Karen Petty, chair of family sciences, and Terry Conner, senior counsel at Haynes and Boone LLP and former Dallas Afterschool Network Board chair. Livestream coverage of the research presentation and panel discussions can be accessed at

In the Houston session Feb. 10, again moderated by The Texas Tribune, Feyten and Dawson join TWU Professor Pat Driscoll, whose expertise encompasses health disparities and management of health systems, and Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Wayne Brewer on a panel to discuss how educational barriers and access to health insurance influence women and their economic advancement.  Livestream coverage of  the Houston event can be accessed at

“As the nation’s largest university primarily for women, Texas Woman’s University believes that when you educate a woman, you empower the world,” TWU Chancellor Feyten said. “By aligning with the Dallas Women’s Foundation for this critical research on the economic barriers for women, we show our commitment to advancing women to improve their personal circumstances and the economy of Texas and beyond.”
