Pioneer Pride Dance Team places first
Texas Woman’s University’s new Pioneer Pride Dance Team took first place in Division II during its first ever appearance at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) College Spirit Camp held at Southern Methodist University in Dallas July 22-24.
TWU’s Pioneer Pride Dance Team placed ahead of other established dance teams in Texas, including Tarleton State University and Dallas Baptist University. In addition, as part of its recognition for "Most Improved Team" at the camp, TWU’s dance team received a “Silver paid bid” to nationals. This means the team will receive $5,000 to $6,000 to pay for travel to the NDA national dance competition.
The Pioneer Pride Dance Team — the university’s first-ever spirit dance team — was formed in April 2017. It is led by Head Coach Allison Fields, a TWU dance alumna, and Katie McAninch, who works in TWU’s Fitness and Recreation. The 17-member team consists of 16 females and one male, with 11 incoming first-year students, two transfer students and four current students from all over Texas with a variety of majors.
“With it being our first year and a new team, it is amazing we did so well at camp,” Fields said. “Our performance level and recognition speaks to the grit and determination of our team. I am so proud of them all.”
