TWU and beyond
Images from the Texas Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Records, 1960-1980, housed in the Woman's Collection, were used in the recently published book, Many Beginnings: A History of Women in Sports At Midwestern State University by retired MSU professor Sherry Gillespie with Karen K. Rogers.
Silver Wings, Flying Dreams: The Complete Story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots: The TWU WASP Archive provided image, documents, and research support to producer Bill Suchy for his documentary which aired on WUCF-PBS on Memorial Day weekend throughout Central Florida. Silver Wings, Flying Dreams tells the story of the WASP, a band of pioneering females aviators, who were able to shatter the glass ceiling demonstrating that women could fly military aircraft. This documentary features surviving WASP, reliving their personal wartime experiences from flight training to ferrying bomber and fighter aircraft, flying as engineering test and transport pilots, towing targets for anti-aircraft gunnery practice and their battle for veteran’s status – a fight that took more than 30 years to win.
The Woman's Collection was recently featured in the Association of College & Research Libraries monthly newsmagazine College & Research Libraries News.
