Placement Tests

All undergraduate students, including international students, who attend a state-supported college or university in the state of Texas must meet TSI Requirements. TSI tests cover three sections: reading, mathematics and writing skills. For undergraduate students whose native language is not English, this test is still required even though TOEFL scores may show proficiency in the English language.

The following exemptions apply:

  • SAT – Verbal 500 with Composite of 1070 / Math 500 with Composite of 1070
  • ACT – English 19 with Composite of 23 / Math 19 with Composite of 23
  • TAKS – Verbal 2200 with a 3 or higher on the essay / Math 2200
  • Military honorable discharge, retired or released after 1990
  • Transfer from an accredited (private or out-of-state) institution at which the student has satisfactorily completed college-level coursework as determined by TWU
  • Academic Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (from a Texas public institution)
  • Transfer from an institution at which the student has met readiness standards by that institution (Texas public)
  • Enrolled in a certificate program of one year or less at a public junior college, public technical institute, or public state college.
  • Currently serving and, for at least the three-year period preceding enrollment, has served as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States
  • Students who feel that they are exempt from TSI based on one of these exemptions will need to bring proof of exemption to the Office of Undergraduate Studies prior to registering for classes.

In addition to the TOEFL and TSI tests, certain students (primarily freshmen students) may be required to take the Math and English placement test after arrival on campus. All undergraduate science majors must take the Science placement test after arrival on campus. If you are required to take these brief on-campus assessment tests, you will be notified during your advising session prior to registration.
