Consistent with the mission of TWU, which emphasizes liberal arts and professional education, the mission of the History Program is to develop an understanding and appreciation of the discipline as well as its interdisciplinary connections to other fields of inquiry.
The study of history is inherently multicultural. Our programs provide opportunities to learn about diversity of experiences, including a global range of cultural issues that address the intersecting roles of race, class, ethnicity, religion and gender. Attention to historical evolution illustrates the complexities of decision-making, the forces producing historical change and a diversity of intellectual traditions.
Courses in our programs seek to develop the skills needed for critical and analytical thinking, evidence-based research, oral and written presentation, and public leadership. Ultimately, our courses prepare graduates for active citizenship and success in graduate and professional education or in the careers of their choice.
