TWU offers art classes to the community 9/30/08

DENTON — Area residents will have the opportunity to learn and explore a range of media in the visual arts studio at Texas Woman’s University.

Classes offered include beginners classes in drawing, book making, using Adobe® Photoshop® and painting.  The registration fee is $95.  Participants will be responsible for purchasing materials for the classes.  The registration deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 7, with classes beginning Oct. 14 and 15.  To register, visit www.twu.edu/ce/Art.asp.  For more information, call the TWU Office of Lifelong Learning at (940) 898-3408.

TWU Drama presents ‘Helen’ — 9/24/08

DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University drama program opens its 2008-09 season Oct. 9-12 with “Helen,” a revisionist tale of Helen of Troy from Greek mythology.

Performances will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9; at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 10-11; and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.  All performances will take place in the Redbud Theatre Complex, located on the northwest side of historic Hubbard Hall on TWU’s Denton campus.  Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.  For reservations or more information, call the TWU Box Office at (940) 898-2020.

TWU receives $3 million for new Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center — 9/22/08

DALLAS — Longtime Dallas resident Florence A. Doswell has donated $3 million to Texas Woman’s University for its new T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center. TWU’s college of nursing in Dallas will be named The Houston J. and Florence A. Doswell College of Nursing in honor of this gift, which is one of the largest single gifts from an individual to TWU.

TWU student awarded Javits Fellowship — 9/17/08

DENTON —Jose Zamora, a master of fine arts student in dance at Texas Woman’s University, has been awarded a 2008-09 Jacob K. Javits Fellowship.  Mr. Zamora is one of only 30 university students in the United States, and one of two in Texas, to receive the fellowship, which covers tuition and fees and provides up to $30,000 a year for living expenses.

TWU to host Graduate and Professional School Fair Oct. 6 — 9/16/08

DENTON —Texas Woman’s University will host a Graduate and Professional School Fair on Monday, Oct. 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the TWU Student Union, located on the southwest corner of Bell Avenue and Administration Drive.  More than 50 universities, colleges and professional schools from across the United States and other countries will share information about their programs with prospective students.  All interested persons are welcome to attend.

Gov. Perry appoints TWU’s Tilley to Nursing Facility Administrators Advisory Committee — 9/16/08

DENTON — Gov. Rick Perry has appointed Donna Scott Tilley, Texas Woman’s University associate professor of nursing, to the state’s Nursing Facility Administrators Advisory Committee.

Dr. Tilley is the only nurse on this state nursing home regulatory committee and will serve a five-year term, which expires Feb. 1, 2013.

Tom Kemper to be guest speaker at TWU Sept. 24 — 9/16/08

DENTON — Green business pioneer Tom Kemper, CEO and founder of Dolphin Blue, will speak on “Sustainability in Our World” at Texas Woman’s University on Wednesday, Sept. 24.

Trey Songz performance at TWU rescheduled for Sept. 17 — 9/15/08

The performance of R&B singer Trey Songz at TWU was rescheduled to Sept. 17
due to Hurricane Ike.

DENTON —R&B singer/songwriter Trey Songz will perform in concert Wednesday, Sept. 17 on Texas Woman’s University’s Denton campus.  The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the Margo Jones Performance Hall, located at Oakland and Sawyer streets.  Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for faculty and staff and $5 for students.  The ticket price at the door is $15.

TWU sees seventh consecutive year of enrollment growth — 9/11/08

DENTON — Enrollment at Texas Woman’s University has risen for the seventh consecutive year, according to preliminary 12th class day data, with a record 12,469 students enrolled for fall 2008. This marks a 2.5 percent increase from last fall.

TWU chosen for new national American Democracy Project initiative —  9/09/08

DENTON — The American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) has selected Texas Woman’s University to participate in the American Democracy Project Civic Agency Initiative, a new national program focused on encouraging students to be civic leaders in their communities.

TWU is one of 16 universities in the U.S. and the only university in Texas to be selected for the three-year program, which will begin this fall.

Coordinating Board awards TWU largest work-study mentorship grant in the state — 9/08/08

DENTON — The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) has awarded Texas Woman’s University a $175,000 grant for its G-Force student-mentorship program, which is designed to increase enrollment among first-generation college students in Texas. This is the second consecutive year that TWU’s G-Force program has received the most funding of any university in the state.

These grant funds will go directly to TWU students in the form of wages earned for working in the TWU Go Centers.

TWU’s Houston Center presents nursing lecture Oct. 31 — 9/08/08

HOUSTON — Applying evidenced-based practice to clinical nursing management is the focus of Texas Woman’s University’s annual Good Samaritan Foundation Fall Forum on Friday, Oct. 31.

The presentation, titled “Translational Research: Moving Study Findings into Practice,” is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon in the Houston Endowment Auditorium located at TWU’s Houston Center, 6700 Fannin St. in the Texas Medical Center. HOUSTON – Texas Woman’s University is inviting alumni and the community to join its students, faculty and staff as TWU Pioneers for the Cure during the 2008 Houston Komen Race for the Cure®.

“The Power of a Healthy Woman Symposium” presented at TWU Sept. 20
— 9/02/08

DENTON — Providing tools that incorporate wellness strategies into daily life is the focus of an upcoming symposium at Texas Woman’s University. Adult women are encouraged to attend and bring their mothers, sisters and high school age daughters (juniors and seniors) to the half-day event that shines the spotlight on women’s health.

“The Power of a Healthy Woman Symposium” will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 in room 202 of the Classroom and Faculty Office Building (CFO). TWU releases Dean's List for spring 2008 (pdf)— 8/12/08

DENTON —Texas Woman’s University has released its dean’s list for the spring 2008 semester.

Undergraduate students who complete at least 12 graded credit hours and achieve the minimum grade point average as determined by their particular college or school are eligible for the dean’s list.

TWU’s Sheardy elected as SENCER Leadership Fellow — 8/12/08

WASHINGTON, D.C./DENTON — Dr. Richard Sheardy, professor and chair of the Texas Woman’s University chemistry and physics department, has been elected a 2008-2009 SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Leadership Fellow by the National Fellowship Board of the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement.

Dr. Sheardy is one of 76 educators elected to the inaugural class of fellows from the more than 1,300 faculty members and academic leaders who are part of the SENCER community. SENCER is a national initiative that engages students in science and math by focusing coursework on real world problems.

DENTON — A team of six TWU faculty and administrators has been selected to attend the 2008 SENCER (Science Education for New Civic Engagements and Responsibilities) Summer Institute Aug. 8-11 in Santa Clara, Calif.

The TWU participants are: Dr. Ann Staton, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences; Dr. Don Edwards, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and chair of the department of math and computer science; Dr. Sarah McIntire, chair of the biology department; Dr. Richard Sheardy, professor and chair of the chemistry and physics department; Dr. Richard Jones, associate professor of chemistry; and Ms. Cynthia Maguire, chemistry lecturer.

TWU College of Nursing receives $600,000 federal grant for DNP program7/30/08

DENTON/DALLAS — Texas Woman’s University’s College of Nursing has been awarded a $614,959 federal grant for its doctor of nurse practitioner (DNP) degree program.

The funds, to be awarded over a three-year period by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Advanced Education Nursing Program, will be used to improve access to TWU’s DNP for nurses serving rural and underserved populations.

TWU Drama to perform at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland — 7/29/08

DENTON —The Texas Woman’s University drama program is taking its production of “Alice in Wonderland” overseas to the world’s largest arts festival — the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

DENTON – Texas Woman’s University Chancellor Dr. Ann Stuart was recently named a Woman of Distinction by the American Association of University Women (AAUW) of Texas at its annual convention.

TWU receives $850,000 from Boenker estate for nutrition student scholarships — 6/02/08

DENTON – More Texas Woman’s University students will receive scholarships to help meet their educational goals thanks to an $846,524 gift from the estate of Ima Jean Boenker of Fort Worth, a TWU alumna. The gift will be used to establish the Ima Jean Boenker Scholarship, which will provide up to $8,000 a year to students majoring in nutrition and food sciences.

DENTON — Approximately 1,471 students — the largest graduating class in Texas Woman’s University history — will receive their degrees Saturday, May 10 during ceremonies scheduled for 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. on the university’s Denton campus.

Commencement ceremonies include students from TWU’s Denton, Dallas and Houston campuses. Approximately 802 undergraduate and 669 graduate degrees will be awarded during the three ceremonies.

DENTON — Kelly McCullar, associate vice president and controller for Texas Woman’s University, has been named the 2008 G. Ann Uhlir Fellow in Higher Education Administration.  He is the first staff member to win the award, which is available to TWU faculty, staff and graduate students.

DENTON – The Texas Woman’s University fashion and textiles department will host its annual spring fashion show —2008 Montage Senior Fashion Show: The Gallery — at 7:30 p.m., Friday, May 2 in the Margo Jones Performance Hall on the TWU Denton campus.

TWU’s Barnes receives Distinguished Achievement Award from CASE District IV — 4/22/08

DENTON — Carolyn Barnes, associate vice president for marketing and communication for Texas Woman’s University, received the 2008 Distinguished Achievement Award from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IV during the district’s annual conference held April 5-9 in Little Rock, Ark.

The award is the highest honor given by CASE District IV to advancement professionals. Ms. Barnes received the award for her leadership and service to the profession, TWU and to CASE.

DENTON— Denton Mayor Perry McNeill will issue a proclamation at the City Council Meeting tonight naming May 2008 as Exercise is Medicine™ month. The proclamation is one of the first issued in the nation and is part of the month’s activities coordinated by Texas Woman’s University.

TWU announces 2008 distinguished alumni — 4/07/08

DENTON — Three women with distinctive careers in higher education have been named as the 2008 Distinguished Alumni by Texas Woman’s University and the TWU Former Students Association.

Dr. Anita Cowan, TWU associate professor emerita in sociology and social work; Dr. Darlene A. Kluka, professor in the Department of Biokinetics, Sports and Leisure Sciences at the University of Pretoria in South Africa; and Dr. Sally A. Roden, associate provost and dean of undergraduate studies for the University of Central Arkansas, will be recognized at the Distinguished Alumni Awards Luncheon on April 26.

DENTON —Texas Woman’s University student Cynthia Johnson of Lewisville was one of only two graduate students in the nation to receive the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) 2008 Health Education Student Support Award. DENTON — Area residents are invited to explore the spaces where the arts happen during a tour of Texas Woman’s University’s Denton campus.

Two state representatives meet at UNT, TWU to discuss higher education needs, opportunities — 3/13/08

DENTON – State Rep. Myra Crownover and State Rep. Warren Chisum, chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, met with officials from the University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University on Wednesday (March 12) to discuss the opportunities and needs of higher education in Texas.

DALLAS — The Hoblitzelle Foundation has awarded $500,000 to Texas Woman’s University for its new T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center.

TWU’s new T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences-Dallas Center combines TWU’s Parkland and Presbyterian sites into a dynamic campus-in-one building at the Parkland location.  Groundbreaking for the 190,000-square-foot facility is scheduled for 2009, with a planned opening of the building in 2011.

Coordinating Board awards TWU nearly $250,000 to address nursing shortage — 2/11/08

DENTON/DALLAS — Texas Woman’s University — already the largest educator of new nurses in Texas — will offer a weekend nursing program to help alleviate the nursing shortage, thanks to a grant from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB.)

TWU will use the $249,777 grant from the THECB to partner with the Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas to create the “Reinventing Nursing Education: An Education and Practice Partnership.”

DENTON — The Texas Woman’s University Drama Program brings David Auburn’s award-winning drama “Proof” to the stage of the Redbud Theater Complex Feb. 28 through March 2.

Modern Healthcare ranks TWU-Houston’s HCA program as 4th largest — 1/24/08

HOUSTON – Modern Healthcare, the weekly magazine for hospitals and healthcare industry executives, recently ranked the master of health care administration program at Texas Woman’s University’s Institute of Health Sciences-Houston Center the 4th largest in the nation.

The rankings were tallied using the total number of students enrolled, based on July 2007 reports. TWU’s Houston program tied with the University of Pennsylvania as 4th largest program with 160 students.

DENTON — Texas Woman’s University continues its role as a leader in promoting math and science careers for women by presenting the “Expanding Your Horizons™ in Science and Mathematics” conference for middle school girls on Saturday, Feb. 16.
